The M3 is the wunderkind of the 3 series, and has been the performance standard in sport coupes for almost 30 years. The first M3 was built to homologate the BMW 3 series for Group A Touring Car racing in Europe based on the E30 2 door coupe, and included aerodynamic body panels as well as upgraded suspension and engine components. It was distinctive with its integrated rear spoiler, larger wheels and special colors. 17,184 M3's were built from 1986 to 1991.  The 4 cylinder M3 produced 197 hp, up 94 hp over the standard 318i.

The next body style, the E36 was built from 1992 to 1999, but M3 versions were not imported into the US until the '95 model year.  Horsepower was improved again with a straight six producing 240 hp for the US version. Car & Driver called the E36 M3 one of the best handling cars of the 90's.

The third generation of the M3 was built on the E46 platform from 2001 to 2006, power was up to 333 horses in the US version, more performance upgrades including a carbon fiber roof were included, and Road & Track crowned the 2006 M3 6-speed as its favorite sports car of all time.  BMW created several variants, including the M3 competition package (ZCP), the lightweight M3 CSL and the 493 hp GTR V8, all greater performance cars which usually ended up on the track in Europe and the US.

The fourth generation M3 was built from 2007 to 2013 on the E90 (saloon), E92 (Coupe) and E93 (convertible) platforms.  The new S65 engine produces 414 hp, and a seven speed Getrang automated manual transmission was offered as an option after 2008.

In the 3 decades of the M3, countless trophies have been won in professional and amateur racing globally, and the M3 has cemented its reputation as the ultimate driving machine.
