The VW Scirocco was a hatchback with a sporty design sold by the company between 1974 and 1992. In fact, the Scirocco proved to be so successful, that it went a long way in boosting the reputation of Volkswagen. Work on the vehicle first began during the early 1970s. The car was first intended to serve as a replacement for the Karmann Ghia coupe. Volkswagen elected to use the A1 chassis also used in the Jetta and Golf as a cost-saving method. Even so, almost all of the Scirocco parts were re-engineered to provide a sporty-drive and the vehicle featured completely new styling that was sportier and sleeker than the Jetta and the Golf. The first Scirocco went on sale in 1974 in Europe. It was sold in America the following year. Sales of the vehicle continued throughout 1988 in the United States and lasted through 1989 in Canada. In Germany, sales of the Scirocco lasted until 1992, at which time it was finally replaced by the VW Corrado.
The Scirocco GTi was introduced in 1978 to Europe. This performance vehicle was equipped with vented front discs, front and rear sway bars, a high compression, fuel injected engine. Wrap around turn signals were introduced to the Scirocco in 1978. The following year, a 5-speed transmission was introduced to the Scirocco.
