The Audi 200 was an upgraded version of the popular Audi 100, and better suited to the US market. The additional Audi 200 parts added included performance enhancements, a 2.2 liter straight five cylinder. This engine was turbocharged and injected with the US required catalyst converter, and puts out 163hp. The 20 valve version of the 2.2 five for the 1991 Audi 200 Quattro 20V bumped up the ante with a lively 220 horses. This higher performance version was the predecessor for the S6.
The Audi 200 Quattro became the icon for Audi's performance revival in the late 80's, led chiefly by the Trans Am team under the care of Bob Tullius's Group 44 Racing. This car impressed the world with the extreme handling characteristics, and even though the turbo 5 cylinder motor put out as many or more ponies than the competitor's V8's, it was the Quattro system that both impressed and frightened the race community – and sold cars on Monday. After taking 8 out of the 13 wins in their inaugural season, The SCCA, listening to cry babies on other teams with conventional race cars, changed the rules to allow only two wheel drive cars with American engines. With its tail held high, Audi took its show to IMSA, where it continued to dominate.
