While the 3 series BMW sedans, convertibles, coupes, hatchbacks and touring wagons were well balanced, handled nicely and held the road, in foul weather traction could be a problem - especially with the power and throttle response of the spirited BMW high revving engines. In 1985, an all-wheel drive version was introduced as the 325iX. Although successful, the iX models were discontinued in 1991.
From 2001 to 2005 BMW brought back all-wheel drive in the E46 platform 3 series, designating it the 325xi. In the US, all-wheel drive was only available on the four-door sedan and the five-door Sports Wagon.
While the xi versions were a welcome relief for drivers in severe winter climates, the trade-offs were added weight, slower acceleration, decreased mileage, higher maintenance costs and softer suspension. The transfer cases used in the E46 xi cars was the New Venture 124 full-time four wheel drive gear driven case, which provided 38% of the torque to the front drive wheels and 62% to the rear. The E46 xi cars also feature DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) to moderate wheel spin on slick surfaces.
The next generation all-wheel drive system for the 3 series (as well as other models such as the X1, X3, X5, 5 series, 6 series and 7 series), from 2006 to the present, was BMW's own engineered xDrive system, however, it was only offered in higher powered 328 and 335 versions in sedans from 2003 to present and coupes from 2007 to 2013.
