The BMW M6 is a world class sports/luxury coupe and convertible, preferred by the elite in all corners of the globe. While the 6 series is an excusive car with advanced engineering, when transformed by BMW Motorsports into an M car, it can be both refined and exhilarating.

In 1983, BMW Motorsport mated an evolution version of the M1 straight-six engine and dropped it with a 6 speed transmission into the lovely 6 series, E24 platform coupe.  BBS wheels, a fatter front air dam, larger brakes, enhanced suspension and a rear spoiler all serve to announce the special edition M6.  The European version made 86 hp, while the catalytic equipped North American version made 256 hp.

The first generation M6 was the second fastest BMW at the time, second only to the M1 supercar. Without a limiter, Rug Cunningham ran a stock '87 in the Mexican la Carrera Classic in 1989 and was clocked on one stage at 176 mph.  BMW stopped production of the M6 in 1989, after creating 5,859 cars, 1,767 for the North American market.

After a six year gap, the new second generation M6 was shown at the Geneva Motor Show, based on the 6 series which began production one year earlier.  This M6 was powered by a V10 engine with a ‘power button' which alters throttle response to boost hp from 400 to 500.  While BMW claims a 4.4 second 0-60 time, Road & Track timed it to 60 in 4.1 seconds. This E63/64 platform road rocket was the second most expensive Beemer ever offered (after the 750i at $137,000) priced at $108,150 for the convertible and $102,350 for the coupe.

While the world held its breath, another year passed until the present M6 was shown at Geneva in March of 2012. Based on the newly engineered F12/13 platform, the fitted engine was the M tuned S63 V8, putting out 560 wild horses.  Even though carbon fiber is generously used above the belt line to keep the center of gravity low, the current M6 is slightly heavier its predecessor. But it will still make 60 in 4.2 seconds.
