Produced between 1992 and 1995, the Porsche 968 was designed to serve as a replacement to the Porsche 944. The 968 actually began as a S3 model of the original 944 and was intended to replace the previous S2 variant that had been originally introduced by Porsche in 1989. Due to the fact that a large number of the 944 parts were replaced or modified during various development stages, Porsche instead opted to introduce the S3 as an entirely new model altogether. As a result, the new vehicle ultimately became known as the 968. Production of the Porsche 968 was relocated from the VW-Audi plant located in Neckarsulm to the Porsche factory located in Zuffenhausen.
In terms of style, the 968 had a vague resemblance to the 928. The 968 featured a new version of the straight-4 engine of the 944. Other changes included a VarioCam variable valve timing system, dual-mass flywheel, and new exhaust system. As a result of the changes, the 968 engine became the second-largest four-cylinder to ever be available in a production vehicle. Consumers could also choose a 6-speed manual transmission. The 968 was also the last new front-engine car that would be introduced before the Cayenne SUV hit the market in 2003. The 968 was also offered to the public as both a convertible and a coupe.
