The VW Tiguan made its debut to the public in 2007. Since that time, this vehicle has become one of the most successful sports utility vehicles to be introduced to the German market. Technically, the Tiguan is a compact crossover vehicle or CUV. It was manufactured using the same PQ35 platform that is used for the VW Golf. The VW Tiguan features two rows of seating and a 4-cylinder engine.
The Tiguan made its debut in the fall off 2006 at the Los Angeles International Auto show. The production form of the vehicle debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show the following year with production actually beginning in the winter of 2007. More than 700,000 of the vehicles had been sold by 2011. A variety of trim levels is available for the VW Tiguan in markets around the world. Trim levels for US vehicles include the S, SE, and the SEL. Other trim levels are available for the VW Tiguan in other markets.
The name for the vehicle takes its form from a portmanteau of the words for tiger and iguana in German. Interestingly, the name stemmed from a naming contest sponsored by an auto magazine publisher in Germany. Other options submitted included Liger, Rockton, Namib, Nanuk, and Samun.
