First introduced in 1979, the VW Vanagon was a camper van that featured a rear engine. In North America, the Vanagon was officially known as the T3, although it was identified at the T25 in Europe. This fuel-efficient vehicle proved to be popular with both campers as well as families. The Vanagon was actually the result of the microbus that had become so iconic during the 1960s. Despite its popularity, it never quite gained the same cult following as the VW microbus.
Production of the Vanagon ran from 1979 until 1992. It was actually the third generation of bus to be produced by Volkswagen. VW produced a variety of Vanagon models with an array of interior options. The Vanagon was sold as the Club Joker, Westfalia Joker Top Joker, Sport Joker, and many other options in Europe. The California model was produced between 1988 and 1990. It was available as a high top or pop-top camper and could be equipped with a 2.1 liter fuel-injection gasoline engine, 1.6-liter turbo diesel or 1.9-liter gasoline engine. There were also numerous options available in North America. All of the Vanagon's engines were boxer style. One of the benefits of the Vanagon is that it offered above average fuel efficiency. With an 18.4-gallon capacity fuel tank, the Vanagon could achieve 16 mpg in the city and up to 18 mpg on the highway.
