A steering tie rod or track rod connects a vehicles steering rack to the steering arm. They act as a pivot point between the steering system and the hub/wheel assembly. Whether your vehicle uses a steering box and pitman arm or a rack and pinion system, it is the steering tie rod that transfers the steering input to the wheels. The outer end of the tie rod is usually adjustable, allowing the length of the rod to be changed and vehicle alignment to be corrected. Because the ratio of a tie rod’s length to width is very large, the tie rod is susceptible to bending under larger than intended compressive forces. It is wise to inspect tie rods after a minor collision or road hazard impact and replace if the part shows any sign of deformation.
