The power is immediately converted to DC through a series of diodes and directed to the battery, which then powers the rest of the vehicle. The alternator is most commonly driven by your engine drive belt. A working alternator should generate close to 14 volts. If the measured electrical voltage drops below 12v it is a sure sign of an alternator charging issue, generally followed by a battery light on the dash illuminating. When diagnosing a charging problem, it is wise to also inspect all related ground points as well as the system voltage regulator, most often located on or in the alternator itself.
