The 2013 Saab Owners Convention will be held at the Desmond Hotel & Conference Center in Albany, New York from August 15-18th.Registration is now open, so whether you’re a regular at this event or a first timer, now is the time to sign up!
The Saab Owners Convention is an annual four day tradition that brings together hundreds of Saab enthusiasts from around the country for a long weekend of competition, camaraderie, and cars – Saab cars, of course. It’s amazing how much is packed into such a short time. The highlight is Track Day, an event that allows participants to drive their Saabs around a track, provided your vehicle meets the safety requirements. Safety first!
In addition to track day, the Saab Owners Convention also features awards given out to the best Saab’s in multiple categories. Some of the favorite categories are:
This category is judged by other SOC attendees rather than appointed judges, so it truly is the People’s Choice. Categories generally are: 2-digit (SAAB 92, 93, 95, 96, 97 [Sonett], sometimes 99), SAAB 99, SAAB 900, Saab (and SAAB) convertibles, SAAB 9000, Saab 9-3, and Saab 9-5. The best cars in this category are the ones that grab people’s attention and are memorable. Think you have a Saab that fits the bill? Then let’s see it!
The best of the best, Saabs entered in this category will be judged by highly experienced Saab experts chosen by the Saab Club of North America Concours Committee. Equal weight is given to original/OEM condition and overall cleanliness. Have a pristine Saab that is the envy of your neighborhood? Prove it in this competition!
Larry “Stroker” Williams Spirit of Saab Award
Larry Williams was a very special Saab owner who passed just prior to the 1998 National Saab Convention. Larry, his wife Katha, and his 1963 bullnose Saab 96 were fixtures at the annual conventions. This memorial trophy is given annually to the person who best embodies Larry’s passion and dedication to Saabs.
The Saab Owners Convention concludes every year with a parts and memorabilia auction, the proceeds of which are donated to theDouble H Ranch, a charity co-founded by Charles R. Wood and Paul Newman that provides specialized programs and year round support for children and their families dealing with life-threatening illnesses. All programs at the Ranch are free of charge and capture the magic of the Adirondacks. This is truly a worthwhile cause, and the SOC is proud to sponsor such a charity.
