Volvo S60 Cabin Air Filter – A DIY

The air entering your vehicle’s cabin from the outside isn’t always clean. In fact, it rarely ever is. Keeping the nasty stuff out of your car, and your lungs is the job of the cabin air filter specially manufactured to capture airborne particles.

Over time, the filter gets saturated with particles and begins to restrict the airflow within the AC system. When that happens, it’s time to replace the filter. Today we’ll show you how to change the Volvo S60 cabin air filter on your own.

When to Replace Cabin Air Filters?

For the cabin air filter to do its job well, it needs to be changed periodically. It is recommended to replace your cabin air filter every 10,000 miles or at least once a year. Depending on the driving conditions, this period may be shortened or extended. If you use your vehicle in dusty environments, your filter will get clogged up faster and require a replacement every 3,000 miles.

If the cabin air filter is not changed when it’s due, the quality of the fresh air entering the cabin will decrease, which prevents the air conditioning system from working properly. The additional strain on the AC system is enough to transfer some of that strain onto the engine, leading to a noticeable loss of power and other symptoms. This will seriously affect your car’s driving performance both in summer and winter.

More importantly, old, dirty filters can cause health problems such as asthma, allergies, and other health-related issues. This is especially true if you live in large cities where traffic congestion is enough to overwhelm a regular cabin air filter.

Performing filter maintenance at regular intervals and replacing it when necessary increases air quality and prevents such problems. In addition, filters block dust and unburned fuel particles from entering the passenger cabin, which also helps. Lastly, expired filters that are packed with debris will begin to smell.

Regular filters mainly block out dust, pollen, and bacteria in the cabin of your vehicle. Activated carbon (charcoal) filters can do all of that, but they also can prevent bad odors and harmful gases from entering your vehicle.

Although most vehicles come with regular filters as standard, you can always install a charcoal cabin air filter in your car. You should be able to prevent exhaust or cigarette smoke from entering your vehicle by using charcoal cabin air filters.

Volvo IAQS

The Interior Air Quality System (IAQS) is a fully automatic air quality system designed by Volvo. It purifies the air in the passenger compartment, eliminating all kinds of pollutants such as particulates, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, and ground-level ozone. Also, if the air quality sensor detects that the outside air is polluted, the air intake is closed by the IAQS and air recirculation is activated.

IAQS is part of the Clean Zone Interior Package (CZIP) specification. There is an easy way to figure out if your Volvo has the IAQS. Just check the recirculation button on your AC unit, if it has an auto mode you have the system installed.

How to Replace the Cabin Air Filter on Volvo S60

You can easily change the cabin air filter of your vehicle yourself. First, you need to find the air filter suitable for your vehicle model. Once you have the right part, follow these simple step-by-step instructions.

Step 1 — Remove the Kick Panel

Your Volvo’s cabin air filter is located behind the glove box, under the passenger sidekick panel. Two T25 screws are used to hold the kick panel in place. Remove these screws and the panel should slide out towards you when you wiggle it a little.

Step 2 — Remove the Cabin Air Filter Cover

Locate the cabin air filter cover, it is the only white cover in the area. It’s kept in place with 4 screws and the ones at the back might be a bit tight. Unscrew them and the cabin air filter cover will be free to pull off.

Step 3 – Remove the Cabin Air Filter

Reach inside and grab the filter with your fingers and pull, it should slide out easily. You can bend the filter to take it out easily when it pushes against the floorboard of your vehicle.

Step 4 – Replace the New Cabin Air Filter

Your Volvo has two slots for cabin air filters. If you are using an activated carbon (charcoal) filter, use the slot closer to the firewall of your vehicle. If you are using a regular filter, use the other slot that is closer to the cabin.

Do not use two filters, they will block the airflow. Slide your new filter in the correct place. Your new filter should have slits on the side that will allow you to bend them while installing.

Step 5 – Put the Cabin Air Filter Cover back on

Using a ratchet wrench screwdriver might make reaching two screws at the back somewhat easier. Screw all four screws tightly.

Step 6 – Put on the Kick Panel

Slide the panel back in its place and using two T25 screws, screw the panel tightly. Leaving these screws loose will end up making rattling sounds in your Volvo.
