A Saab Sonnet About a Saab 9-3

Two months ago we asked you to write about a personal car love story for Valentine’s Day. We received many dozens of submissions (way more than we expected because you guys are the best) but could only pick one winner. They were all varying degrees of funny, creative, passionate, and weird, and they were great. This week we reread some of them and decided we had to share some of our favorites. Each one we publish over the next few weeks will be awarded $75 in eEuro credit. This contest entry is a Saab sonnet about a Saab 9-3, not a Saab sonnet about a Saab Sonett. Make sense?

Saab 9-3 Turbo X

SAAB 93 Turbo X, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth of your oil pan, breadth of your bumpers and height of your sun-roof
Along with your surprising dependability, hard to fathom you were made by GM without a goof
My soul stirs when we go out for a drive.
You cause me to wish to be by your side for the rest of my days
and even tho it’s many years since new, you appear to be rust proof.
I love thy X-Drive for it makes me feel aloof
And your swiveling headlights when cornering deserve much praise.
I love thy road feel with a passion
Turbo power to spare yet 23 miles per gallon
And your still contemporary design will never go out of fashion.
It is now over eight years since your arrival yet your sleek good looks still turns heads
Whether at the beach, the car wash or at the gas station.
SAAB 93 Turbo X is truly a car for all seasons and of course, for all the right reasons; agile in dry weather or wet
Runs like a demon in the snow or mud, other than a Subaru, no cars around like this nowadays.
Why O why didn’t GM realize what they had, one great car, finally,
in a ocean of vehicles that were just plain bad.
Couldn’t the brains in Detroit just followed the tried and true path of the Beetle,
just making minor design updates and an annual tweaking of the engineering
But no, they had to pull the plug and make SAAB fans go fetal.
When my days are done and we’ve had our fun, like an old Viking chief
Put me in my Turbo X 9-3, light a fire and push us out to sea.
