Competition of Bad Final Round

Some of these have been burning a hole in our computer folders (after burning holes in engine blocks and pistons), but it’s been so busy around here lately that it isn’t until now that we finally get around to the final leg of the epic Competition of Bad 2017, a Facebook contest we put on calling for your most absurd and crazy car related carnage.  If you missed Part 1, check it out here, and part 2 is located just yonder.  The final round features entries number 45-66, there are some gems that are worth scrolling down for.  More noodled valves, thrown rods, severely melted pistons, and an self immolating N55 turbocharger.  Keep your timing in good shape and change your cabin air filter.  Here we go!

47. Bad injector harness. 1991 Audi 200 20v Avant – Nick S

OK…that is the most impressive melted piston we’ve ever seen.  The fact that the hole didn’t even start near the wrist pin is exceptionally exquisite. We won’t even get started on the way this was caused by a malfunctioning injector harness.  Lean conditions are no joke! -ed


48. Simca 1200s.Busted collar on shift rod tunnel in transmission case – Randy R

We don’t have too much experience with Simca‘s other than racing with them in LeMons, but we know this is probably a bad thing. -ed


49. 3rd to 2nd gear shift….was meant to go into forth….BMW at lemons race in NJ.

Pretty good looking moneyshift, usually they result in bent valves but the way the gearbox ventilated like that leads us to believe it may be in your interest to dial it back two notches from complete HAM if you want to get to the end of the event! New engine mounts and transmission mounts help, too.  -ed

For track events, we recommend stiffer bushings and engine mounts to provide more positive gear changes, greatly reducing the chances of this happening.  We will have a blog post about this coming soon. -ed

This is why you always should take your foot completely off the clutch pedal between shifts.  Letting your foot rest on the clutch allows the friction materials to burn and ultimate overheats.  In this case, big time. – ed

Another example of why quality oil change maintenance is so important.  These engines are known to be fairly reliable. -ed


56. Saab 99 when driven without coolant for about 200 miles. – Richard BC

The Saab 99 cooling system is notorious for failing, especially due to the gear driven water pump being located in the engine block.  There are ways to bulletproof this with high quality electric pumps, but that’s been covered pretty well in some of our partner forums like Saabcentral.com and Saabnet.com -ed

If that’s what happens when you run at 20psi…then no…no it does not. Everything in there looks broken, everything. -ed

Alright, well.  This might be a tie for the most impressive melted piston we’ve seen (with the one pictured above).  This photo apparently has a horror movie basement photo filter applied to it, making it the true stuff of nightmares. -ed

Separated, exploded, then destroyed.  This must have made a bad noise.  Single mass flywheel conversion kits are available. -ed


As we wait for some of these engines to go back together, remember that next year we will have another contest.  While for some reason all you completely neglect to keep your engine serviced, make sure at least to have a camera on you when things go wrong.  You could be the next winner of our competition of bad, 2018 edition!
