Ah sunshine. It’s something that many of us in the Northeast consider a commodity worth more than precious metals once daylight savings time come into effect. We regretfully turn our clocks back an hour and all take a collective hiatus from the track, while subsequently burrowing into our dens (garages) like bears, where we all hibernate until Punxsutawney Phil decides to break our hearts every year with six more weeks of winter. It’s usually about this point we decide to dust of the car, scour Craigslist for better replacements, and ultimately dream about selling it all for some obscure 1 of 200 AWD diesel wagon that you can’t get parts for anymore. (Or maybe that is just us looking up the weird cars). However, at the Krab Shack, we decided to be proactive this year and spent some quality time going over the poor Jetta during the winter doldrums, ensuring
2017 marks the 45th Anniversary of racing for Team Sahlen’s Joe Nonnamaker. Through these years, Joe has driven in over 400 races, on over 50 different tracks in over 30 different cars. After this much racing, many racers would be looking to slow down,,but not Joe Nonnamaker. As Joe races through his 4th decade of driving, he is looking towards another exciting year of racing. Joe will be driving for Team Sahlen in their 2017 racing campaign. This campaign will include 14 races in 7 weekend events. Additionally, Joe will be splitting his driving in these races between Team Sahlen’s Porsche Caymans and Mazda RX7s. Not only are these cars separated by 25 years in age, but these are two distinctly different race cars, one with the motor in the back and one with the motor in the front. But one thing is for sure, Joe will be racing hard
Last week I received word that the cage design was done from S&W Race cars. John had sent over the drawings and and a general layout of the cage. After a few minor tweaks, we gave him the go ahead and the kit was on their CNC bender by the end of the week. I drove down to their shop the following week which is just outside Lancaster county in Pennsylvania to pickup the kit and the chassis. The tubing all came pre-bent, notched , numbered and ready to be installed . I was very impressed with the facility and now that the kit has been programmed into their system, they can be duplicated for a very reasonable cost (somewhere in the $600 range for 1 ¾” DOM tubing). If you’re interested in your own cage kit, contact S&W, they have kits already available for several European makes and models.

Rally is fun, sideways, addictive, but above all, brutal. All those traits define my experience at the 2017 Sno*Drift rally. Sno*Drift is the season opener of the Rally America season. This is my home event and I ran it as my first stage rally last year. It’s a unique event, even among snow rallies. Since studded tires are outlawed in Michigan, the competition is run without any studded tires. It’s a constant hunt for grip. The first time, I was driving conservatively and staying out of trouble. I decided that this year I would push to try to get my first podium. Since last year’s race, I’ve added a number of performance BMW parts, including an M3 LSD, M50 intake, S52 camshafts, long tube headers, custom exhaust, and most importantly, a hydraulic handbrake. Friday, We Start the 2017 Sno*Drift rally At the start of the Friday stages, I was very
