If you have a 9-5 and have been in need of an HID headlight ballast, you may have noticed the price from SAAB is a little on the high side. At the time of publishing this, the price is approaching $250 per ballast. We realized how big of a problem this was when we came across a car where someone had machined a D1S bulb carrier to fit a halogen bulb into the HID housing, in order to avoid the high price quoted to replace the original HID ballast. However baffling and slightly funny as that was, we took it upon ourselves to find a source for these at a better price. [Click here to view the kit] Normally, we would contact the manufacturer of the Genuine part (in this case Valeo), but unfortunately they are not offering the 9-5 ballast in their aftermarket catalog at this time. A short history of brakes Once upon a time, there were manual hydraulic brakes, made up of several parts in the automobile as a mechanical system. You pushed the brake pedal, which in turn pushed a plunger into a hydraulic piston called a “master cylinder“. The fluid then pushed into the brake calipers, expanding them onto brake rotors, ultimately stopping the car. Since then, a few innovative auto parts and systems were introduced to assist drivers in achieving the best braking performance possible out of their cars. One of these parts is a brake booster to make pushing the pedal easier. ABS is another invention – more of a system of parts in the vehicle – which sent all the fluid coming out of the brake master cylinder through a block of valves. That way, a simple computer could detect if a wheel stops moving (locks up) and proportion braking to force

Now he lives in the far east, servicing the auto industry in Asia. As car guys do, they find the noisiest, sexiest cars they can get their hands on, and out there, Japan is the tree that bears this fruit. Alternate title: Matt Nelson Goes To Tokyo. -ed ————— The venue for this year’s Tokyo Auto Saloon was held just outside Tokyo near Soga. The extended family of eEuroparts made the voyage from Taiwan to check out some of Japan and surrounding Asia’s best performance suppliers and race teams. The limited number of Saabs in Asia has provoked us to move on to the Toyota GT-86 (or BRZ…or FR-S), a fine reliable sporting machine. Tons of cool aftermarket parts have been developed, most popular are
