Being a Saab owner and an automobile enthusiast often makes you feel like a bit of an outsider. Oh there is an enthusiastic Saab community for sure, but you don’t run into them in the streets too often. Car shows are dominated by row after row of Mustangs and Corvettes, and local Autocross events are a sea of Subarus and Miatas. When you mention your drive a Saab you get one of 2 reactions, “German cars are pretty nice” or “Didn’t they go out of business?”. Saab of course is not German but Swedish, and yes they did go out of business, but just because they went out of business doesn’t mean the cars that they produced suddenly ceased to exist. I may not be able to strike up a conversation with the Corvette guys, but there is a certain sense of pride you get by not disappearing into the
Good car owners keep their receipts. Great car owners track their repairs. When I buy a used car, it’s like striking gold to find a stack of receipts in the glovebox. Even if you don’t start off with records on a used car, you can still fill in what you know as you go. If you plan on owning a car for a long time, there is sure to be things you will forget, and tracking maintenance is the only way to be sure you aren’t screwing something up. Don’t wait until 3 years down the line when you are trying to remember what transmission fluid you put in, or what mileage you did spark plugs last. The first thing I do is start a new Excel spreadsheet on my computer. In the first row, I identify the columns as: Date, Mileage, Repair, Parts, Price, and Comments Date, mileage, and
Picture yourself strapping into a GTLM class Porsche 911, with about 450hp behind you and a long, dark strip of pavement in front. It’s 2am, you’re still sweating. Welcome to the 24hrs of Daytona. Every year Daytona International Speedway hosts one of the biggest sports car races in the country, and it runs non-stop for a full 24hrs. Night racing is a very special brand of crazy, adding stress modifiers on to an already exhausted racing team. When you are part of an event like this, you don’t just want, you NEED every possible advantage you can get just to get through the night, and lighting is a huge part of that Hella is no stranger to sports car racing, they’ve had light bars installed on rally cars since the 60’s, and since then, they’ve proved their quality enough to start supplying car manufacturers with their parts as Genuine OEM.
Hey guys, a little story about my 2000 Saab 9-5 Aero. I never knew too much about Saab until a friend of mine introduced me to Saab. He was actually selling his for a good price, I needed a car so I thought why not, I bought it. The car needed some serious engine work which I knew before I bought it, took my chances anyway. By luck I found a Saab mechanic (Swedish Saab Services) near me. So I made an appointment to have the engine looked at. When I got there I was amazed by the endless possibilities you can do to theses cars. I was hooked right away!!! I made friends with the guys from the shop, and they started telling me what you can do to the car and where you can get your equipment from (performance of course lol). So I started!!!! I got in
We keep a keen eye out for parts trends for certain cars, and in general we noticed something pop up pretty reliably. Once a car passes 10 years of age, the amount of fuel pump sales takes a dramatic rise. That’s because after ten years, most cars are well past 100,000 miles. The stock fuel pump has probably pumped nearly 5,000 gallons of fuel through it (using the generalized metric of 120k mi /24mpg average). Adding to the stress, fuel pumps usually use the fuel it’s sitting in to provide cooling. Running the tank low on fuel can cause the pump to overheat, reducing it’s overall life. If you have a car that’s nearing the big one-oh, keep in mind the warning signs of a fuel pump that is about to give up the ghost, because when it does, you’re not going anywhere. The first and most distinctive will be
