Nokian Launches The WR G4 for All Weather Conditions

Nokian WRG4

Tire shopping can be exhausting.  Changing tires from summer to winter can be exhausting.  Nokian knows this, and the new Nokian WR G4 is designed to alleviate both of these issues.  Hardcore tire snobs know that in the snowy winter conditions, compromising on tires can land you in a ditch (or worse).  When a customer states that they have 4WD or AWD, I like to rebut with the not-so-famous saying ‘It’s called all wheel drive, not all wheel stop’.

Still, I feel bad when they slide into bad situations, and try my best to advocate for proper tires in the conditions they drive in.

Nokian WR G4 All Weather

Around here in Connecticut, and in other places receive sporadic seasonal snow, changing your tires every season can be a chore.  We still do it here at eEuro, because when you have two sets of tires they each last twice as long, and one accident avoided is worth the upfront cost to us.  For more casual drivers and people that don’t go out in the snow, getting a separate set of tires to keep in the garage might be a harder sell.  That’s why Nokian put some serious research into a tire that performs well in deep puddles and snow, but is also a great tire for warm dry summer conditions.

You would think longevity would be sacrificed with such an aggressive tire, but with the Nokian WR G4, that’s not the case.  Nokian boasts a 500UTG treadwear rating, good for 60,000 miles!

The New Nokian WR G4

Nokian WR G4As Nokian puts it, “Forget the forecast”. With dense siping and a very specific tread pattern designed to evacuate water, slush, and snow, the Nokian WR G4 is considered an all-weather tire focusing on versatility.  All-weather tires are a relatively new invention, taking the idea of all-season tires one step further with a little help from science.

While an all-season tire may carry the M+S mud and snow minimum certification, enthusiasts know that many all-season tires will only allow for white knuckle, terrifying driving when you are unlucky enough to get stuck out in bad weather.  A true all-weather tire carries the official severe weather rating, symbolized by a mountain with a snow flake in it.  That’s huge.

Truly All-Weather, not just All-Season

Replacing the outgoing WR G3, the WR G4 continues to bridge the gap by making a comfortable tire for both sun scorched asphalt as well as slushy snowy roads.  Nokian engineers have been pushing the envelope for decades in Finland, and have come up with an advanced rubber compound that is soft enough for the siping to adequately evacuate water, slush, and snow without disintegrating in in the summer like standard snow tires.  The result is a tire that is smooth and quiet for summertime cruising, but can get you through tough situations when the snow starts falling.

Nokian WR G4 Wet Weather Performance

Matt Moran, Owners and CEO of eEuroparts, recently went to the Killington Resort in Vermont for the WRG4 launch to test these tires out first hand.  Even on slick ice, the Nokian WR G4 performed well, ensuring a safe amount of grip with the high tech rubber compound and tread pattern.

The Last Tire You’ll Ever Need

Nokian WRG4Don’t think that this tire won’t handle well because of the siping, several of Nokian’s technical innovations have gone into making the Nokian WRG4 a good handling tire on hot, dry days.  Granted, these are not for occasional autocrossers.  If you notice yourself screeching tires regularly on the streets, you’ll find the Nokian zLine A/S a better choice for warm weather and dry handling.  The WR G4 is meant for commuters and daily drivers that don’t want to change tires between summer and winter, but still want a safe tire for their family in unexpected conditions.

There were almost 19,000 (THOUSAND) traffic deaths in 2017 in the US alone, many of which occurred in bad weather conditions.  It’s commonly known that driving a car is already a dangerous thing to do.  You did your homework, you read the safety reviews and consumer reports.  Why not finish the job and get a set of tires specifically designed to keep you safe no matter what mother nature can throw at you?  Here’s some of the main features that make the new Nokian WR G4 top in its class for all weather safety.

Main WR G4 Features

– UTG500A treadwear rating with a 60,000 mile warranty.

– Locking 3D reinforced sipes make for excellent water and snow evacuation without sacrificing dry weather turn-in response.

Groove Lifts add additional reinforcement between tread blocks for increased stiffness and dry weather handling.

– Unique all-weather synthetic rubber compound ensures great wear resistance and fuel savings in all conditions, regardless of temperature.

Blade Grooves efficiently route rain, snow, and slush away from the contact surface.

Ramp-like tread blocks on the inner shoulder accelerate and guide the flow of water from the longitudinal grooves into the transverse grooves for better evacuation.

– Sturdy longitudinal rib consisting of tread blocks with jagged sipes for maximum snow grip.

Snow Claws on the edges of the tread blocks add surface area for more longitudinal grip in snow, slush, and on ice.

Silent sidewall technology reduces NVH by isolating the sidewall and the wheel rim.

– Severe weather certification for dedicated snow tires, featuring the mountain and snowflake symbol on the sidewall.
