Porsche has released their preliminary sales reports as the company enters the last quarter of 2021. Aside from an overall increase in deliveries, the latest sales reports have shown a peculiar trend. As it turns out, Porsche Taycan has outsold the 911 series for the first time, marking a potential long-term shift in interest from Porsche’s bread and butter brand.

Closing the ICE Gap

Porsche Taycan was first released in late 2019. The first commercial Porsche EV was met with mixed emotions. However, it didn’t take long for its qualities to break the stigma of performance EVs, and warm the hearts of diehard Porsche fans. Since then Taycan sales have been following a steady uptrend across all markets.

Taycan sales continued to grow despite several setbacks that forced Porsche to issue recalls on some of these cars. The last Friday’s sales report surprised many as Taycan had managed to outsell the entire 911 range. Porsche has delivered 28,640 Taycans compared to 27,972 911 models since the beginning of 2021.

These numbers represent a potential end of an era as 911 gives way to modern EV concepts. Taycan could very well be the “911 of tomorrow” as ICE cars slowly retire.

Global Sales on the Rise

Taycan isn’t the only Porsche model that is in high demand. This prestigious German automaker has experienced a 13% increase in global sales. The largest spike in demand was recorded in the US where Porsche sold 30% more cars than last year.

The Porsche Cayenne is still the best-selling model, accounting for 62,451 of 217,198 global deliveries. However, Cayenne could be dethroned next year as Macan is riding its tail with 61,944 units sold this year.

Detlev von Platen, Member of the Executive Board for Sales and Marketing at Porsche AG, noted: “The very high demand for our sports cars continued into the third quarter, and we are delighted to have been able to supply so many cars to customers during the first nine months of the year. The order books are nicely filled and are, in turn, filling us with optimism and enthusiasm as we approach the year-end rush”

Commenting on the ongoing semiconductor shortage, von Platen said: “However, the coronavirus situation remains dynamic, and we are facing challenges in sourcing semiconductors. For these reasons, we are keeping a very close eye on current developments to ensure that we can continue to react in a flexible manner.”
